UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern
UPSC has three stages. Each stage requires a different strategy.
Stage 1: Preliminary (Prelims)
2 Papers: GS Paper I (200 marks) + CSAT (200 marks, qualifying)
Pattern: MCQ | Negative Marking: 1/3rd
Purpose: Screening test for Mains
Stage 2: Mains (Written)
9 Papers: GS I–IV, Essay, Optional (2 papers), 2 language papers
Total Marks: 1750 (qualifying 300 language papers)
Purpose: Merit ranking + Personality Test shortlist
Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)
Marks: 275 marks
Board: UPSC Board members panel
Focus: Personality, mental alertness, critical thinking
Month-by-Month Strategy
Months 1–2: Foundation Building
Read NCERT Books (6th–12th) for History, Geography, Polity, Economics. Build strong fundamentals.
Months 3–4: Standard Books
Laxmikanth (Polity), Bipin Chandra (History), GC Leong (Geography), Ramesh Singh (Economy).
Months 5–6: Current Affairs
The Hindu + PIB daily reading. Maintain a current affairs notebook. Vision IAS Monthly Magazine.
Months 7–8: Optional Subject
Deep dive into your Optional Subject (History/Geography/Sociology/Public Admin etc.).
Months 9–10: Answer Writing
Daily answer writing practice for Mains. Join a test series. Write 5–6 answers daily.
Months 11–12: Revision + Mock Tests
Full syllabus revision, Prelims mock tests, PYQ analysis. Strengthen weak areas.
